Calibration and R&D services

A sensor that hasn’t been calibrated is not a sensor to be trusted. Calibration is not a formality but the basis of every reliable measurement – particularly if accuracy, traceability or certification play a part.

Tempcontrol offers calibration in its own laboratory, through RvA-certified organisations and through VSL, the Van Swinden Laboratory, the Dutch national metrological institute. We advise you on which calibration route best suits the specifications and take care of the entire process from delivery to certified report.

We calibrate, test and research temperature sensor and measuring instruments in our fully equipped calibration laboratory, and we do it ourselves, we don’t outsource that work.

We calibrate thermocouples, resistance thermometers, sensors with thermistor and indicators for a variety of measurement inputs. Calibrations are carried out to specification, in a range from -50 °C to +280 °C, with a measurement capacity to 0.01 °C, on the basis of the international ITS-90 temperature scale. All calibrations are recorded in a calibration report with a unique report number.

Sometimes, a sensor can be difficult to calibrate due to unusual characteristics or demanding circumstances. In such cases, we develop, if necessary, specific tools to be able to carry out the calibration correctly.

The laboratory has:

  • Five liquid-filled thermostatic baths
  • An ultra-stable climatic chamber
  • Tube furnaces in various lengths
  • A water triple point cell (0,01 °C ± 20 μK) as stable reference point
  • Measurement standards calibrated by VSL and checked through the water triple point cell.

As well as calibration, the following services are also possible:

  • Stabilising sensors to 1200 °C
  • Long-term stability research to 1000 °C
  • Thermodynamic research: response time, immersion effect, hysteresis of thermocouples and self-heating of resistance thermometers

Calibration by Tempcontrol is generally the least expensive option. Whether this is the right route depends on the specifications, and we will give our honest advice on which approach is best.

The calibration laboratory is also our development environment. It’s where we develop and optimise new temperature sensors, carry out quality checks and research into sensors and sensor components. For products requiring a lot of research, the lab offers the infrastructure to carry that out in a controlled and documented manner.

Sometimes specifications or certifications require calibration by an RvA-certified laboratory: an independent body approved by the Raad van Accreditatie. Tempcontrol takes care of the entire process, including preliminary study and finalisation. We work closely with a number of accredited calibration institutes in the Netherlands, including VSL. Sensors are tested beforehand in our own laboratory to avoid carrying out expensive external calibrations on instruments that first have to be adjusted.

The entire process:

  • Checking and testing the instruments brought to our laboratory
  • Transport to and from the calibration institute
  • Optimisation of the measurement system if applicable
  • Calculating and importing the parameters, including control if applicable
  • Calibration and certification by the calibration institute
  • Check on the certificate by Tempcontrol

Prices on request and dependent on the number of temperature points, sensors or measurement systems.
